History of Two Birds Coffee

The Beginning

Two Birds Coffee began like most businesses: by identifying a need that was not being met, in this case in the coffee industry in Guatemala. Diego had spent his summer with Ana, our mom, at Finca Esperanza. He observed the costs of an environmentally and equity conscious farm could not be covered by the C-Market’s price of green coffee. In addition, seeing all that organic grown coffee thrown into commodity bags was a waste of what could be a quality cup of coffee. He knew that if he took out the middle-man from the equation and began to sell the coffee directly, that there would be a market for Finca Esperanza’s coffee.

In 2014, he asked Ana to take a chance in the idea. The first five export bags of Finca Esperanza that she gave him was the initial investment in Two Birds Coffee. Diego and Ana spent that year making contacts and taking road-trips around Florida to different roasters. After they sold their first five bags, they decided there was a market for this business. Diego founded Two Birds Coffee and it has been a fulfilling and fun adventure ever since.

How Two Birds Coffee Evolved

Through a lot of trial and error Two Birds began to gain momentum. However, what really pushed Two Birds to evolve quickly was when Ana and Diego attended the first Specialty Coffee Association conference in 2016. This is when we would begin to meet people who would become central to our development not just in coffee importing and sales but also in coffee production for Finca Esperanza. It was during this time that Pancho (Francisco) also joined Two Birds Coffee in the sales department. Roasters would visit Finca Esperanza sharing in their knowledge, assessment, and willingness to be part of a small family’s business journey. These roasters valued our mission and had patience as we learned how to best sell and manage the coffee. It led to a lot of laughs, adventures, and experiences that made Two Birds Coffee into the company it is today.

Where Two Birds is Now

Now, Two Birds has amazing clients in the United States, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. We also have expanded to sell coffee from five different farms in Guatemala and seek to expand to more farms in the future (to know more about the farms see The Farms section). Anamaria has also joined the crew to assist in Guatemala operations, social media, and business development. Two Birds continues with its mission of promoting farmers and roasters who are environmentally and equity conscious while providing an excellent quality cup of coffee.
